Classroom games and outdoor learning

Realm is a platform for real-world games. Teachers create a game with missions, tasks, and places on a map, then host a session while students explore on their phones. It brings the lesson, the route, and the answers into one place.

Build a field lesson around what students can observe

Start with one learning question and a place your class can visit. For a river study, ask students to identify evidence of erosion, photograph a feature, and explain what they noticed. For a neighborhood history walk, use buildings and public signs as prompts. These are example game ideas you can author in Realm, with missions and tasks that fit your own lesson.

Prepare the game before the outing

Write the instructions, place your missions on the map, and decide what students should submit at each stop. Keep prompts short enough to read outdoors and make the expected evidence clear. Plan a route appropriate for your students and test it before the class arrives. Realm supports written answers and photos, so a task can ask students to explain an observation as well as record it.

Host the class with one join code

Students open Realm in their phone browser and enter the session code. Guest play does not require an app install or an account. You can run the session with teams, watch progress, and review submissions. Players can use English or Spanish. Check phone connectivity and location permissions before you head out.

Bring the evidence back into the classroom

Completed runs preserve the answers from play. Use them for a discussion about what students found, compare different interpretations, and revisit written reflections. Realm supports grading and human review; available AI tools and reporting features depend on your plan.
